Closure of Hempsted Tip Delayed as Reopening by Busy Easter Unfeasible

The scheduled closure of the Hempsted Household Recycling Centre (HRC) in Gloucester has been postponed from early January 2026 to a later date. Gloucestershire County Council announced that essential repairs and improvements require more time than initially anticipated.

Originally, the council planned to close the centre in January 2026 and reopen it by Easter. However, following further assessments, it was determined that reopening by Easter—traditionally the centre’s busiest period—would not be feasible. The site’s location on an old landfill demands additional groundwork, which cannot be rushed without compromising safety and efficiency.

Cllr Martin Horwood, cabinet member for nature, climate, and waste reduction, acknowledged the inconvenience the delay might cause. He emphasized, “Our aim is to select the best possible timing for the closure, ideally when the centre experiences lower usage, and to carry out the work during favorable weather conditions to prevent further delays. We will keep residents informed once the new schedule is confirmed.”

The planned upgrades will enhance safety, sustainability, and user experience at the centre. Key improvements include new surface installations, state-of-the-art waste compactors powered by renewable energy, and a new Reuse Shop dedicated to repairing and extending the life of items. Additional measures include better electrical waste protection and new electric vehicle charging points for service vehicles.

During the Hempsted HRC closure, residents can continue to use other recycling centres in Gloucestershire, such as Pyke Quarry and Wingmoor Farm, both operating seven days a week. Alternative waste disposal options, including kerbside collections, bring banks, and bulky waste services, remain available to residents.
