The planned closure of the Hempsted Household Recycling Centre (HRC) in Gloucester has been postponed from its original schedule. Gloucestershire County Council initially aimed to close the site in early January 2026 with a reopening by Easter. However, after further evaluation, the council announced that reopening by Easter, the centre’s busiest period, is no longer feasible.
Situated on a former landfill, the Hempsted HRC requires extensive groundwork to ensure safety and durability. These additional repairs mean the timeline must be adjusted to accommodate necessary improvements without compromising service quality during peak times.
Cllr Martin Horwood, cabinet member for nature, climate, and waste reduction, acknowledged the inconvenience this delay may cause: “We understand this change may be inconvenient, and we sincerely apologize for any disruption. Our objective is to schedule the closure when the centre experiences the least usage and to perform the work in favorable weather conditions to avoid further delays.”

The upcoming upgrades are designed to enhance the centre’s safety, sustainability, and overall user experience. Planned features include new durable surfaces, renewable energy-powered waste compactors, and an innovative Reuse Shop where items can be repaired and given a second life. Additionally, the centre will implement improved electrical waste protection and install new electric vehicle (EV) charging points for service vehicles.
During the closure, residents are encouraged to use alternative recycling centres in Gloucestershire, such as Pyke Quarry and Wingmoor Farm, both operating seven days a week. Other options include kerbside collections, bring banks, and bulky waste services, ensuring that recycling needs remain met throughout the refurbishment period.
The council commits to keeping residents informed as new closure and reopening dates are confirmed.
