Clarence House Shares King Charles’s Simple and Delicious Royal Breakfast Recipe

When you think of the Royal Family’s meals, you might imagine lavish feasts with exotic ingredients served in grand palaces. Yet, one recipe shared by Clarence House reveals that King Charles enjoys a straightforward and comforting breakfast that you can make easily at home.

The dish, known as ‘Cheesy Baked Eggs,’ was introduced to the public in 2020 when King Charles was still the Prince of Wales. Clarence House’s Instagram account shared that the recipe calls for just a handful of cheeses and six other simple ingredients.

“Good food is something that brings great comfort to many of us,” His Majesty remarked during the height of the Coronavirus pandemic. “It is deeply concerning that this crisis threatens one of life’s great pleasures – British cheese!”

To prepare this royal breakfast, start by greasing a baking dish and arranging a base of wilted leafy greens and ripe tomatoes around the edges, leaving a space in the center. Then scatter creamy cheese and torn basil leaves across the greens. You can also add seasoning and sliced charcuterie if you like, though that’s optional.

Create a small well in the center, season with salt and pepper, then carefully crack an egg into the middle. Pour 80ml of double cream over the egg without breaking the yolk, and finish by generously sprinkling grated hard cheese on top.

Bake in a preheated oven at 180°C (350°F) for 8 to 10 minutes. Let the dish rest for a few minutes before serving. The result is a warm, cheesy, and comforting breakfast fit for royalty.

King Charles isn’t the only member of the Royal Family who loves baked eggs. Queen Camilla’s son, Tom Parker Bowles, also has fond memories of the dish from childhood. In his book, Cooking & The Crown, Tom writes that baked eggs—also known as Oeufs en Cocotte—have been a staple at royal tables from Queen Victoria’s time to today. He recalls enjoying the dish after family holidays, using fresh eggs from backyard chickens.

Tom’s cookbook features more than 100 recipes that span centuries of royal cuisine, ranging from decadent meals like ‘Pommes Elizabeth’ to accessible dishes perfect for everyday cooking.

Now, with this simple and delicious recipe from Clarence House, you can enjoy a taste of royal tradition right in your own kitchen.
