Chris Packham Reveals How His Dogs ‘Saved My Life’ During Darkest Times

Chris Packham has opened up about the profound impact his dogs have had on his life, crediting them with giving him purpose during some of his darkest moments. The beloved wildlife presenter, returning to BBC’s Springwatch on Monday, May 26, revealed in a heartfelt interview how his pets “saved my life.”

Known for his warm on-screen presence, the 64-year-old admitted he once felt overwhelmed by despair, confessing, “I was so miserable I didn’t want to be on this planet any longer.” However, his dogs provided an unwavering source of comfort and companionship that helped him navigate these challenging times.

“My dogs took that choice away,” Chris shared. “They gave me the gift of purpose – and it’s the reason I’m still here.” His deep bond with his Poodles is unbreakable; he fondly called his previous dogs “my joy grenades,” describing how their joyful runs and playful spirits could brighten even his darkest days.

Diagnosed with Asperger’s Syndrome at 44, Chris believes the connection between autistic individuals and dogs is especially strong. “I think it’s because we’re never judged. We are always accepted by that animal: the bonds are very tight,” he explained.

He also spoke about the responsibility that comes with caring for his dogs, “I sleep with my dogs, we eat the same thing. I have an enormous responsibility and duty of care to make sure that my dogs are happy and healthy.”

Springwatch, now celebrating its 20th year, kicks off a new series featuring a segment called Springwatch Street, which explores the secret lives of urban wildlife such as foxes and swifts thriving in city environments.

Chris also touched on his longtime friendship with co-host Michaela Strachan, saying their ability to disagree without falling out reflects their strong and trusting bond as both friends and colleagues.

Springwatch returns to BBC Two on Monday, May 26 at 8 pm.
