Chris Boyd Details Gloucester Rugby’s Strategic Coaching Overhaul

Gloucester Rugby’s newly appointed Technical Director, Chris Boyd, has shed light on the club’s recent coaching staff changes aimed at bolstering team performance ahead of the 2026/27 season.

Incoming forwards coach Brett Deacon arrives from Leicester Tigers, bringing valuable Premiership Rugby expertise to the Cherry and Whites following the departure of scrum coach Trevor Woodman, who is set to join Connacht at the end of the season.

Joel Tomkins, a dual-code international, takes over as defence coach from Dom Waldouck, who will transition into the vital role of Head of Player Development. Boyd emphasized the careful selection behind these appointments, highlighting how both Deacon and Tomkins perfectly align with Gloucester’s vision for growth.

“We’ve been very deliberate in shaping this coaching group,” Boyd stated. “Brett understands Premiership Rugby deeply and is familiar with what it means to represent Gloucester, so his return is a tremendous boost. Joel brings a fresh perspective with his experience at the highest levels of both Rugby League and Rugby Union. His defensive expertise and competitive drive will challenge and elevate our players.”

Boyd also stressed the importance of Dom Waldouck’s new role: “Developing home-grown talent is critical for our long-term success. Dom’s leadership in player development will ensure young players receive tailored support to reach their full potential and seamlessly transition into the senior squad.”

Chief Executive Officer Alex Brown expressed enthusiasm about the coaching restructure: “The additions of Brett and Joel underscore our commitment to a clear, focused strategy moving forward and reinforce the strong coaching foundation Chris has built.”

Both Brett Deacon and Joel Tomkins officially join Gloucester Rugby on July 1, 2026.
