After more than 20 years of serving up authentic Chinese cuisine, the China Garden restaurant and takeaway in Whitminster has completed a major refurbishment. Located on the A38 Bristol Road, the venue offers an extensive menu featuring over 100 dishes, including a popular all-you-can-eat buffet.
What began as a modest eatery has grown significantly, adapting over the years to meet growing demand. The restaurant recently closed for three days to revamp its interior, enhancing the dining experience for patrons.
Owned by Ricky Wong, 46, and Kai Hung, 56—both originally from Hong Kong—China Garden has flourished under their leadership. Kai, previously the head chef for six years, purchased the business from its former owner, Ray, who had run the restaurant since its inception over two decades ago. Ricky joined Kai as co-owner three years ago, helping to continue the restaurant’s legacy.

Ricky shared, “The building is quite unique, and over the years, it has expanded from a small venue to the spacious restaurant you see today. We’ve kept our food quality and service consistent while giving the interior a complete modern makeover.”
The refurbishment includes new flooring, fresh paint, and modern furniture, creating a cleaner, warmer space. Regular customers are sure to notice and appreciate the transformation.
With a dedicated team of 16 staff members, China Garden maintains high standards and a welcoming atmosphere. The diverse menu caters to various tastes, including vegan and vegetarian options, ensuring something for everyone.
While the menu boasts many favorites, Ricky notes that the chicken satay skewers remain the most popular dish. He also highlights the deep-fried Brie as an underrated gem—crispy on the outside with a melt-in-the-mouth interior—and personally favors the crispy chili beef, praised for its perfectly crispy texture and flavorful sauce.
