The Rising Sun Inn, a popular pub in Moseley Green near Parkend in Gloucestershire’s Forest of Dean, is facing challenges after noise complaints threatened its long-standing reputation as a live music hub.
For over a decade, the pub has hosted vibrant Sunday afternoon live music sessions in its marquee, drawing hundreds of music lovers, families, visitors, and locals each week. This tradition has become a cherished part of the community, nurturing local bands and creating a welcoming atmosphere.
However, a small number of noise complaints lodged by a nearby resident with the Forest of Dean District Council have put this community fixture at risk. Landlady Nikki Roach has responded by launching a petition supported by more than 2,200 people, urging the council to offer clearer, fairer guidance on noise management to protect live music venues like hers.

Since the first complaint last year, the Rising Sun Inn has worked closely with council officials to address concerns. Measures have included consulting acoustics experts, relocating the marquee from the lower garden to the top car park to lessen sound impact, and implementing weekly decibel readings to monitor noise levels. Despite these efforts and limiting live music hours to between 3 pm and 5 pm on Sundays, complaints have persisted.
Ms Roach emphasized the importance of the Sunday sessions for both local musicians and the community, saying, “We get really busy, it brings in a lot of people. It’s good for local bands, and people love it.” She adds that many neighbours, even those not attending, appreciate the music from their gardens.
The Forest of Dean District Council acknowledges the vital role hospitality and live music venues play in the community but must balance this with licensing and environmental responsibilities. A council spokesperson said the pub’s licence includes conditions aimed at minimizing disturbance and that officers continue to work constructively with stakeholders to ensure compliance while supporting local businesses.
As the Rising Sun Inn awaits further communication from the council, its patrons and supporters hope for a resolution that allows this cherished live music tradition to continue thriving in the heart of the Forest of Dean.
