Cheltenham’s Winter Ice Rink Set for Return with £1.6m Boost

Cheltenham is gearing up to welcome back its much-loved winter ice rink, as the borough council reveals plans to reintroduce the iconic attraction to Imperial Gardens. A fresh planning application has been submitted for temporary structures over three winter seasons, from 2025 to 2028, showcasing the popular covered ice rink.

If approved, the proposal will allow the operation of the rink for up to 75 days annually, from November to January, encompassing the construction and dismantling phases. The application, presented by Hannah Ward of Cheltenham Borough Council, seeks to build upon previous planning permissions for festivals and special events in Montpellier Gardens and Imperial Gardens.

The organizers are committed to maintaining the rink’s presence in the town center and emphasize continual improvements based on past experiences. The proposed three-year permission aims to establish long-term support from suppliers and sponsors, enhancing the event’s sustainability.

A hybrid energy solution is outlined in the application, integrating grid power, high-capacity batteries, and HVO-fuelled generators to minimize environmental impact. Comparatively, the 2024 rink utilized only 12.2% of the fuel consumed by the 2021 rink, resulting in significantly reduced CO2 emissions.

Economically, the ice rink has proven to be a significant driver of festive spending in Cheltenham. Visitor expenditure related to the ice rink amounted to £1.6m, injecting £530,000 of additional revenue into the town, which in turn supported job creation and local businesses.

The proposal enjoys strong support from local business leaders. Fran Inman, CEO of Cheltenham BID, acknowledges the positive impact on footfall and town vibrancy, aligning with the mission to establish Cheltenham as a thriving destination. The Brewery Quarter’s Demelsa Coleman emphasizes the rink’s contribution to increased foot traffic, benefiting local establishments and enriching visitors' experiences.

The endorsement from Keith Squire, general manager of The Ivy, underscores the ice rink’s role in enhancing the community’s holiday ambiance and bolstering nearby businesses, creating a lively atmosphere during the winter months.

Inclusivity remains a priority, with provisions for “relaxed glide” sessions and full wheelchair access, drawing commendation from Jo Middleton of National Star College for its impactful inclusive design.

The council has also addressed residents' concerns, implementing a structured engagement process and continued support channels to cultivate positive relationships and mitigate potential disruptions.

Pending approval, detailed arrangements for power supply, accessibility, and event layout will follow, with the application open for public viewing and comments through the Cheltenham Borough Council planning portal.
