Cheltenham’s Synagogue Lane section of Chelt Walk car park is set to remain available for motorists for at least three more years. The Cheltenham Borough Council has approved the continuation of the car park, despite initially planning for its redevelopment into new offices.
Although the area had been targeted for office development, the site will maintain its current use due to the lack of interest and surplus of available office space post-pandemic. Council officers have recommended the extension of the car park’s use to meet the parking demands of the Jessop Avenue office quarter and alleviate general parking pressure in the town center.
Councillors expressed disappointment in the extension, highlighting the potential for a mixed employment and housing development on the site. While acknowledging the need for office space, they also emphasized the importance of quality housing development in the area for the future.

The decision to prolong the car park’s use was made with the understanding that the site will be reevaluated as part of ongoing development plans for the town. Council members are looking at the potential of utilizing the site for housing developments in the future.
