The Sober Parrot, a cherished alcohol-free community café in Cheltenham’s St James’ Square, has announced it will close its doors permanently on Saturday, January 31, 2026. Operated by The Nelson Trust, the café has been a vital hub since its opening in 2018, offering employment and volunteering opportunities to individuals recovering from drug and alcohol addiction.
In a heartfelt message on Facebook, the café cited ongoing financial challenges affecting many businesses in hospitality as the reason for this difficult decision. The closure will also bring an end to their external catering service, Hub Eats. The Sober Parrot assured customers that all bookings through January will be honored and invited any inquiries via email.
Despite this closure, The Nelson Trust remains committed to supporting recovery communities through other venues like The Clean Plate recovery café in Gloucester. The Sober Parrot is planning a special “Goodbye Event” on its final day as a token of gratitude to all supporters and patrons.

The announcement has saddened many, with community members expressing appreciation for the safe, welcoming space the café provided—a place free from alcohol where people could connect and heal.
The Sober Parrot will close for the festive season from December 20, reopening briefly in early January before shutting permanently at the end of the month. Meanwhile, nearby Mad Dog Brewery has recently opened in the old fire station across the square, offering a new chapter in the area’s evolving hospitality scene.
This closure adds to a series of recent shut-downs in Cheltenham, including other popular restaurants and cafes, reflecting the challenging times for local businesses. Yet, The Sober Parrot’s legacy as a unique recovery-focused venue will be fondly remembered by many.
