The Sober Parrot, a well-loved charity-run community café in Cheltenham, has announced it will permanently close its doors on Saturday, January 31, 2026. To mark the occasion, the café will host a special ‘goodbye event’ as a thank you to its loyal customers and supporters.
Since opening in 2018, The Sober Parrot has operated as an alcohol-free venue in St James' Square, offering employment and volunteering opportunities to individuals recovering from drug and alcohol addiction. The café is run by The Nelson Trust, an organization dedicated to providing safe, recovery-focused spaces.
In a heartfelt statement shared on Facebook, The Sober Parrot acknowledged the financial challenges faced by many hospitality businesses in recent years and explained that these difficulties influenced the decision to close. The closure will also bring an end to Hub Eats, the café’s external catering service. All bookings through January will be honored, and inquiries can be directed to [email protected].

The café will take its usual winter break, closing from December 20 and reopening the week of January 5 before the final day of trading on January 31. Despite this setback, The Nelson Trust remains committed to recovery support through its ongoing operation of The Clean Plate café in Gloucester, inviting those who wish to stay connected to visit.
The Sober Parrot’s closure is the latest in a series of hospitality venue losses in Cheltenham, including Gallimores Kitchen, Ask Italian, Ox, and others. However, new ventures like Mad Dog Brewery have started in the area, offering fresh opportunities.
Community members have expressed sadness and gratitude for the café’s unique, welcoming environment. Comments highlight the importance of having a safe space free from alcohol where people in recovery can enjoy good food, conversation, and support.
As The Sober Parrot prepares to bid farewell, it celebrates the positive impact it has had on many lives and the strong community it has fostered over the years.
