Cheltenham’s New Tesco on Promenade Approved to Sell Alcohol with February Opening Date

Cheltenham is set to welcome a new Tesco store in its town centre, located at 106 Promenade, which has recently been granted a premises licence by Cheltenham Borough Council. The approval lets the supermarket sell alcohol from 6am and offer late-night refreshments from 11pm until midnight, with plans to open the store in February.

During the licensing meeting on December 9, a Tesco representative emphasized the supermarket’s strong presence in Cheltenham, operating five stores in the area, including a superstore and four express outlets designed for convenience and quick shopping. The new store aims to serve the local community’s needs, with recruitment efforts prioritizing local residents.

“We focus on offering a carefully selected range of alcoholic beverages tailored to the local area,” the representative explained. “We do not stock high-strength products except premium or craft options, and exclude products like white ciders or other stronger drinks commonly found in smaller convenience stores.”

The licensing panel discussed the appropriateness of the proposed hours, particularly the sale of alcohol between 6am and 9am. Chairman Simon Wheeler noted that while pubs and clubs nearby remain open well past midnight, early morning alcohol sales seemed unusual. In response, Tesco confirmed that the licensing hours align with their trading hours, catering to customers such as overnight shift workers who might consider 6am their evening.

Reassurance was given that the amount of alcohol sold would be limited, as this is not an off licence store but rather a supermarket with a small, focused alcohol section. Council solicitor Vikki Fennell added that Tesco’s presence in the town has not been linked to any anti-social behaviour concerns at existing stores, supporting the application’s approval.

With the licence granted as requested, Cheltenham residents can look forward to the new Tesco opening its doors in February, offering extended convenience with alcohol sales included.
