Derek Cole, a beloved Cheltenham great-grandfather and community legend, passed away just days before Christmas at the age of 92. Though he did not live to hear the news, Derek was posthumously honoured with the prestigious Keep Britain Tidy Litter Legend award, recognizing his tireless efforts to keep his neighbourhood clean.
A retired postman of 35 years and devoted community volunteer, Derek was known far and wide for his twice-weekly litter-picking routine—even after enduring surgeries that left him reliant on a walking stick or frame. His dedication extended beyond simple cleanups; he was often seen clearing drains of rubbish during heavy rain, preventing flooding and environmental harm.
His daughter, Susan Cole, described him as a “hero,” “legend,” and “inspiration,” highlighting how deeply he was woven into the fabric of his community. “Dad was well known locally as he was very community minded. Litter picking was just one of the many things he did to help out. He would have been thrilled to receive the award,” she said. Neighbours have embraced his example and continue the litter-picking tradition he started, proudly carrying forward his legacy.

In the previous year’s Great British Spring Clean, Derek armed himself with a bucket and litter-picker to remove discarded cigarette butts and other waste around local pubs and restaurants. His commitment never wavered, and his impact was recognized at an awards ceremony held at the House of Commons, where his family accepted the honour on his behalf.
A heartfelt funeral notice in the Gloucestershire Echo celebrated Derek as a “staunch charity volunteer and community supporter,” as well as a “beloved husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, and friend.”
Derek’s posthumous award was one among several presented during the 2026 Keep Britain Tidy Great British Spring Clean Awards, an event that kicks off a nationwide effort to tackle litter. Keep Britain Tidy spokespeople praised Derek as a true local hero who took immense pride in his neighbourhood. “His daughter described him as a hero and an inspiration, and we couldn’t agree more,” they said.
The 2026 Great British Spring Clean runs through March 29, rallying volunteers across the country to help improve the environment. To date, almost 525,000 bags of litter have been pledged to be collected, a testament to the growing community spirit that Derek Cole so deeply embodied.
