Cheltenham’s Iconic Wishing Fish Clock Returns with Bubbles and Chimes

Cheltenham’s cherished Wishing Fish Clock has returned to delight visitors and shoppers at Regent Arcade, much to the joy of the local community. Known for its whimsical chimes and enchanting bubbles, this quirky clock now performs every half hour, just as generations fondly remember.

Suspended above the arcade’s central atrium, the mechanical clock is one of Cheltenham’s most distinctive landmarks. After a period of silence and stillness, the Wishing Fish is now bubbling back to life, releasing streams of bubbles that float playfully over the crowds below.

For decades, the clock has been a beloved attraction, drawing families and visitors eager to watch its moving figures and catch the elusive bubbles. Its return has sparked warm nostalgia among locals who recall childhood moments spent beneath the shimmering spectacle.

The timing of the clock’s revival is perfect, coinciding with the town centre’s festive shopping season, extended opening hours, and family-friendly events—adding a sprinkle of magic to the bustling atmosphere.

Shoppers are encouraged to pause, look up, and make a wish as the Wishing Fish resumes its joyful ritual half-hourly. The Regent Arcade Shopping Centre shared their excitement on social media, saying: “Guess who’s bubbling with excitement? The Wishing Fish Clock is back, coming to life every half hour with its cheerful chime and wonderful bubbles—just like it used to! Make a wish when you’re next here…”

Reactions from the public have been equally enthusiastic, with one visitor remarking, “So it should be. Bubbles for the babies,” and another praising, “Well done, this is great.” A touch of humour also surfaced, as one joked, “I hope that you have anti-slip bubbles or the health and safety police will be after you…”

Originally designed by Stroud artist Christopher ‘Kit’ Williams in 1985 as a centrepiece for the newly opened Regent Arcade, the Wishing Fish Clock stands over 45 feet tall and is thought to be the tallest mechanical clock in the world. Its captivating design includes a goose seemingly laying an endless stream of golden eggs and a family of mice perpetually evading a snake perched atop the clock.

Though the Covid-19 pandemic led to a temporary halt, the clock’s return ensures a new generation of children can experience the magic of catching bubbles beneath its enchanting display.
