Derek Cole, a cherished Cheltenham grandfather known for his tireless litter-picking efforts, passed away just days before Christmas at the age of 92. Though he never learned of his latest accolade, his legacy lives on through the community he inspired.
Last year, Derek was nominated for the prestigious Keep Britain Tidy Litter Legend award, a recognition he earned through his commitment to keeping his neighbourhood clean. Despite undergoing several surgeries in recent years that left him reliant on a walking stick or frame, Derek maintained a routine of clearing litter from his street twice a week. His dedication extended beyond ordinary litter-picking; he was especially known for clearing drains during heavy rains to prevent blockages.
His daughter, Susan Cole, proudly described him as a “hero,” a “legend,” and an “inspiration.” She shared, “Dad was deeply community-minded. Litter-picking was just one way he contributed. He would have been thrilled to receive this award. His neighbours are now continuing his mission, which makes us all so proud.”

Active until his final year, Derek participated in the Great British Spring Clean, equipped with a bucket and litter-picker, removing cigarette butts and other rubbish left behind by visitors to local pubs and restaurants.
Though Derek passed away in December, his family accepted the award on his behalf at a ceremony held in the House of Commons earlier this month, marking the start of the current Great British Spring Clean campaign.
A funeral notice in the Gloucestershire Echo described Derek as a “former postman of 35 years, staunch charity volunteer, and community supporter,” as well as a “beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend.”
Derek was among several litter-picking champions honoured at the 2026 Keep Britain Tidy Great British Spring Clean Awards. The awards ceremony celebrated individuals whose efforts enrich their communities and inspire others.
A representative from Keep Britain Tidy said, “We are incredibly proud to posthumously award Derek Cole the Litter Hero Award. His passion and pride in his neighbourhood were evident and deeply respected. His daughter’s words reflect exactly what Derek meant to those around him.”
This year’s Great British Spring Clean runs until Sunday, March 29, with nearly 525,000 bags pledged for collection. Community members are encouraged to participate via the Keep Britain Tidy website and continue the legacy of care for local environments sparked by heroes like Derek Cole.
