Cheltenham’s Bagel Haven: The Steamhouse Delivers Authentic American Deli Vibes

Cheltenham boasts a vibrant dining scene, including Michelin-starred restaurants, but sometimes a casual, satisfying lunch is all you need. During a recent visit to the town centre, I discovered The Steamhouse on St George’s Place—a café instantly appealing with its rich red-brick façade and historical charm, marked by an old plaque reading ‘Crescent Bakery’.

Known proudly as the ‘Home of the Bagel,’ The Steamhouse delivers an authentic American deli experience right in Cheltenham. Large signs in the windows advertise not only a vast array of bagels but also espresso and doughnuts, promising a menu full of comforting treats.

Step inside, and you’ll find a modern and stylish interior. White tiled walls, lush potted plants, and a cozy merch stand selling branded apparel and house-roasted coffee beans create a welcoming atmosphere. The cabinet by the counter showcases tempting sweet delights—fluffy doughnuts and chunky cookies among them—while the wall menus boast 18 different bagel fillings plus tempting sides like hash brown tater tots, halloumi fingers, and tempura battered frickles.

Aiming to emulate the legendary bagel scene of New York, The Steamhouse certainly succeeds. Despite being tucked away on a quiet street, it radiates that cool, relaxed American deli vibe, complete with bench seating by the window perfect for people-watching.

I chose ‘The Greek’ bagel, loaded with grilled halloumi, avocado, hummus, honey mustard, and fresh greens. Served alongside were traditional tater tots, upgraded to ‘Tubby tots’ seasoned with mustard maple for an extra zing, all costing £12.90.

The meal arrived promptly in a branded paper bag, made fresh behind the counter. The bagel itself was soft and lightly warmed, perfectly stuffed with creamy, seasoned avocado spilling out invitingly. Yet, the real highlight was the mustard maple tater tots—their sweetness combined with a gentle spicy kick complemented the bagel beautifully, leaving me craving more.

Eating the bagel was deliciously messy—a true sign of a meal thoroughly enjoyed as I wiped up the last bites. The visit, though brief, was a gratifying experience highlighting The Steamhouse’s commitment to quality and flavour.

With so many tempting filling combinations, I’m eager to return and sample more. Cheltonians may already cherish this spot, which is nearing its fourth anniversary, but if you haven’t visited yet, The Steamhouse is a lunchtime destination definitely worth exploring.
