A Cheltenham woman is gearing up for a daunting challenge in memory of her close friend who battled cancer alongside her. The two friends, both diagnosed with breast cancer, formed a strong bond over their ten-year journey of fighting the disease together.
Linda Jackson, 58, from Cheltenham has set her sights on participating in this year’s TCS London Marathon on 27th April. Her aim is to raise much-needed funds for Sue Ryder Leckhampton Court Hospice, the facility that provided essential care for her friend.
Undeterred by her own health struggles, Linda is taking on this monumental task as a tribute to Debbie, her dear friend who fought breast cancer alongside her. Debbie spent her final days under the care of Sue Ryder Leckhampton Court Hospice in Cheltenham.

Joining Linda on this remarkable endeavor is her son, David Jackson, 23, who has secured a support runner’s place to assist his mother in achieving her goal of crossing the finish line. Despite living with two Stage 4 cancers, Linda remains resolute in her determination to press forward.
Linda’s journey with cancer began in 2011 when she was first diagnosed with a rare Neuroendocrine tumour - metastatic cancer. She then received another devastating diagnosis of primary breast cancer during one of her check-ups. This was when she crossed paths with Debbie, forming a deep and enduring friendship based on shared experiences and unfiltered honesty.
Reflecting on the crucial role played by Sue Ryder Leckhampton Court Hospice in their lives, Linda expressed her deep appreciation for the support they provided during their difficult times.
Debbie sadly passed away in March 2024, leaving Linda devastated and grappling with feelings of guilt. Despite her own health challenges, Linda embarked on a running journey as a means of staying active and resilient in the face of adversity.
Initially starting with “5k Your Way”, an initiative that promotes physical activity for those affected by cancer, Linda progressed to completing over 30 parkruns across the UK by July 2023. Even after the cancer spread to her lungs, she remained undaunted, eventually achieving the significant milestone of completing her 100th Parkrun on 29th March 2025.
It was Linda’s son, David, who took the initiative to secure a place for the London Marathon. When neither of them managed to secure a ballot place, Linda applied for a charity place and chose Sue Ryder Leckhampton Court Hospice as the beneficiary.
With Linda needing a support runner due to her health challenges, her son stepped up to fulfill this role, highlighting the profound impact of their shared training experiences as a precious opportunity to bond and support each other.
As they make their final preparations for the marathon, Linda and David reflect on the significance of this challenge as a way of creating lasting memories and honoring their journey together.
Looking ahead to race day, David eloquently expresses his motivation, emphasizing the desire to acknowledge his mother’s resilience and give back to the charity that has provided unwavering support to their family.
Linda’s resolve remains unshaken as she looks beyond the marathon, expressing her determination to continue fundraising and participating in more events, underscoring her refusal to let cancer diminish her spirit.
