Cheltenham Town midfielder Tommy Backwell has completed a loan move to National League South club Weston-super-Mare. The 22-year-old midfielder has seen limited game time this season under manager Steve Cotterill, making only two EFL Trophy appearances.
Backwell, who has not featured in League Two since Cotterill’s appointment in late September, played in EFL Trophy matches against Bristol Rovers and Tottenham Hotspur Under-21s. Originally joining Cheltenham on loan from Bristol City in January 2025, Backwell quickly impressed and secured an 18-month permanent contract with the club.
Last season, Backwell made 10 League Two starts and scored on his full EFL debut in a 2-1 home win over Salford City. This loan move to Weston-super-Mare also sees him reunited with Scot Bennett, another Cheltenham player who recently joined the Seagulls.

Backwell is expected to make his debut for Weston-super-Mare in their upcoming match against Bath City on Tuesday evening. Since Steve Cotterill’s arrival, Cheltenham Town has seen 15 players depart either permanently or on loan — not including Hakeeb Adelakun, who briefly signed before moving to Doncaster Rovers.
