Cheltenham Town’s 500 Club Fundraiser Rescued by Generous Sponsor

For over 25 years, Cheltenham Town’s 500 Club has been a vital source of fundraising, generating more than £200,000 to support the club. However, the volunteer-led initiative had announced it would close after its upcoming £5,000 Christmas prize draw, citing rising costs linked to online account filing.

Thanks to the timely intervention of local businessman Chris Pursey, owner of PayItMonthly, the 500 Club’s future is now secure. Pursey offered to cover the accountant’s fees for submitting the annual Corporation Tax returns, a gesture that lifted the financial burden threatening the scheme.

“I was truly touched by the overwhelming support after we announced our closure,” said Steve Smith, chairman of the 500 Club. “Special thanks to Chris Pursey and Warren Francis of Francis & Co for stepping in. Their generosity means we can continue our work.”

The Christmas draw winner will be revealed at halftime during Cheltenham Town’s home match against Shrewsbury Town on Boxing Day, with Mr. Pursey presenting the cheque.

Steve Smith, a lifelong Robins supporter, leads a dedicated committee including his son Ashley, the website administrator, and treasurer David Taylor. The team has set an ambitious new fundraising goal of £250,000 over the next six to seven years, aiming to not only retain but grow their membership base.

The 500 Club’s contributions have funded numerous enhancements at Whaddon Road, including portable goalposts, groundskeeping equipment, frost protection, improvements to the Robins Nest bar, physiotherapy tools, an ice bath, signage, car park line markings, stewards’ jackets, and a heavy-duty washing machine. Currently, the club holds over £23,000 ready for future projects.

Membership is £5 per month, with weekly prize draws of £300 or £500, plus the annual £5,000 Christmas prize draw, providing ongoing excitement and vital funds to support Cheltenham Town.
