Cheltenham Town secure first opening day victory under Steve Cotterill with resilient win over Rotherham United

Cheltenham Town began their League Two campaign with a hard-fought 2-1 victory against Rotherham United, marking their manager Steve Cotterill’s first opening day win with the Robins. Cotterill acknowledged the strength of the opposition despite recent reports of turmoil at Rotherham. He praised the work of their manager Alex Bruce and highlighted the quality and athleticism present in their squad.

“I knew it would be a tough game,” Cotterill said. “Rotherham have strong players and a good team. The first game of the season is always challenging at home due to the pressure and emotion, but the grit and determination our players showed, along with the goals, were terrific.”

Cheltenham took the lead shortly after a hydration break in the first half, courtesy of Charlie McCann. Cotterill noted that a number of new faces started the match and that the team had to adapt to Rotherham switching to a back three, which caused some early confusion in wide areas. Despite not playing at their best, Cotterill expressed satisfaction at securing three points from the season opener.

Regarding a possible penalty incident, Cotterill said, “The lads felt it was definitely a penalty. Jonathan Tomkinson, who was involved, immediately told me there should have been one. But decisions can go either way, and I haven’t reviewed it again.”

A half-time substitution was made due to Shaun McWilliams suffering a groin injury rather than his earlier yellow card. This necessitated a tactical reshuffle, with Cotterill acknowledging that the second half was a tricky period in terms of game management.

After Rotherham equalised, young loanee Jake Evans scored a memorable winning goal, marking a significant moment for the 17-year-old, who will celebrate his 18th birthday on Friday. Cotterill emphasised that the identity of the goalscorer matters less than the result, recalling a previous goal credited to Jamie Victory or Duffo that secured promotion.

The manager also praised the defensive efforts of Robbie Cundy and Pierce Sweeney, highlighting their courage to perform well after some difficult pre-season moments. On recruitment, Cotterill confirmed the club had signed ten new players so far, mostly free transfers and loans, and indicated the squad would benefit from further additions, particularly another centre-back and central midfielder.

“It’s been a tough summer,” Cotterill admitted. “I’ve been very involved in driving improvements at the club alongside Keith Burt and Russ Milton. It’s required a lot of hard work and many conversations to bring in the right players.”

Andi Weimann, one of the more prominent signings in recent times, was singled out as a positive influence both on and off the pitch. Cotterill emphasized the importance of managing Weimann’s integration carefully.

Reflecting on the win, Cotterill expressed relief and satisfaction. “After promotions in previous seasons, this victory feels especially rewarding. The substitutions and the tactical adjustments made at half-time were key to securing the win.”

Finally, Cotterill shared his pleasure at reconnecting with football figures such as Steve McClaren, Steve and Alex Bruce, and former player Matt Smith during the matchday, underlining the camaraderie within the football community.

Cheltenham Town will now look ahead to building on this positive start as the season progresses.
