Cheltenham Town Pursues Defender Sam Lavelle After Carlisle Exit

Cheltenham Town has moved swiftly to offer a contract to veteran defender Sam Lavelle after his release from Carlisle United. The 28-year-old boasts a rich footballing journey, including spells at Blackburn Rovers and Bolton Wanderers during his youth, followed by impactful periods at Morecambe, Charlton Athletic, and a loan stint with Burton Albion.

Lavelle signed with Carlisle United in the summer of 2023, where he quickly became team captain. Despite his leadership, he could not prevent Carlisle from dropping to the National League last season. Throughout two campaigns at Brunton Park, Lavelle made 89 appearances, demonstrating consistency and experience before being one of eight players released by manager Mark Hughes at season’s end.

Cheltenham Town’s interest in Lavelle coincides with their need for a reliable central defender following Tom Bradbury’s move to Harrogate Town. The club previously attempted to secure Sam Stubbs permanently, last season’s Supporters' Player of the Year, but he appears set to join another side. Meanwhile, defender Ibrahim Bakare is available for transfer midway through his contract with the Robins, and Scot Bennett remains with the club after triggering an appearance clause, despite recent knee surgery.

In other squad movements, left-back Ryan Haynes has declined a new deal to sign with National League newcomers Brackley Town.

Cheltenham Town’s players are scheduled to return for pre-season training on June 26, with their first friendly match set for July 4 against Bishop’s Cleeve.
