Cheltenham Town manager Steve Cotterill expressed mixed feelings following his team’s 2-1 loss to Swindon Town. He highlighted some defensive lapses that led to both goals, including a soft mistake from a throw-in and a lapse in concentration from a young player, yet he believes Cheltenham were the better side throughout the match.
“We conceded two soft goals, one from our own throw-in and another following a switch-off from a young player, which gave them an advantage. Despite that, I thought we were the better team today,” Cotterill said.
Cheltenham posed significant questions to their opponents, particularly in the first half, with Cotterill noting their overall control of the game. He commented on a contentious moment where Cheltenham should perhaps have been awarded a penalty, although he acknowledged such decisions can be subjective and that they may benefit from penalties in future matches.

The manager praised his squad’s resilience and passing ability, especially considering several changes made to the lineup. “The lads didn’t give up and showed good composure at times. We had moments of rhythm in the game, and I definitely don’t think we deserved to lose. One goal was from our own error, and the other could have been prevented,” Cotterill remarked.
Specific players drew his attention, including Kirsten Otchere who had a notable chance saved by the opposition goalkeeper, and Ryan Broom who scored a “lovely goal” after coming on as a substitute. Cotterill also discussed Jake Evans' threat down the wing and highlighted the inconsistency of Jordan Shipley, suggesting the winger may currently lack confidence but has shown he can do more. He aims to support Shipley in regaining his form, drawing on past experiences where he successfully encouraged the player.
The manager lamented the absence of key players such as George Miller, James Wilson, and Shaun McWilliams, all of whom would have strengthened the side. He indicated that some squad members like Joe Tomlinson have stepped up amid these challenges.
Commenting on young player Freddy Willcox, Cotterill noted the defender’s efforts since returning from a potential loan spell and praised his performance when brought on late in the game.
Regarding transfer targets, Cotterill remained non-committal, saying that with only a week left in the transfer window, decisions remain fluid. He was also asked whether an incomplete bench affected the result but insisted that the starting players were capable and made enough efforts to secure a better outcome.
Reflecting on the overall performance, Cotterill stated: “If we take the results out of the equation, I saw more positives today than in our game against Rotherham last week. We deserved three points today based on our performance, even if we didn’t get them. That’s football, and these things tend to even out. We need to maintain good performances, and the results will follow.”
Despite the defeat, Cotterill sees encouraging signs in his squad’s development and remains focused on improving as the season progresses.
