Cheltenham Town Manager Steve Cotterill Reflects on Chesterfield Defeat, Mo Faal Debut, and Full-Back Performances

Cheltenham Town manager Steve Cotterill shared his thoughts following a narrow 1-0 defeat to Chesterfield. Despite the loss, Cotterill felt the team showed determination and could have secured a draw, citing a few good chances that went begging. “They are a good team,” Cotterill acknowledged, “and we knew coming into the game it would be tough. We didn’t find the same rhythm we had before the break, and on turnovers, we needed more composure.”

Cotterill noted that both teams faced challenges settling into the match after the mid-season pause. “There was a bit of a second-wind situation with many players. It’s always difficult coming off a break to find sharpness.” He also reflected on the swirling wind at the open stadium, which affected both sides but did not explain Cheltenham’s less sharp performance.

Highlighting individual efforts, Cotterill praised George Miller for his battle up front, remarking on a missed opportunity when Miller sent a shot over the bar. Ben Stevenson also came close with a second-half strike that was partially blocked. Jordan Thomas was instrumental at right-back, causing problems for Chesterfield’s defense and forcing a change on their side.

The manager was pleased to give Mo Faal his debut, though his minutes were deliberately limited to 10-15 as he works back to full fitness after a long layoff. “Mo’s presence has been great for the squad. He’s humble and has settled in well. We’re managing his minutes carefully but hope he can contribute more as he sharpens up.” Cotterill explained that Faal’s loan is essentially “pay as you play,” emphasizing a patient approach to his integration.

In Sherring’s absence due to suspension, Ryan Broom took the right-back position impressively. Cotterill praised Broom’s honesty and ball-playing ability, elements critical to the team’s style. On the other flank, Jonathan Tomkinson continued to excel, successfully neutralizing threats from tricky wingers.

Ben Stevenson’s return after a short layoff was also positive, despite Cotterill’s caution in managing his minutes and fitness. “We had to stop and start with Ben during the game to manage his condition, but it was important for him to get some time on the pitch.”

Looking ahead, Cotterill stressed the need for recovery and readiness for upcoming fixtures. “After a long day and early start, the focus is on rest and recuperation to be ready for Monday’s game.”
