Cheltenham Town manager Steve Cotterill has expressed confidence that Isaac Hutchinson will remain at the club for the rest of the season, despite speculation about a recall from his parent club, Bristol Rovers.
The 25-year-old attacking midfielder has been a standout performer for Cheltenham this season, netting seven goals in 14 appearances since joining on a season-long loan on September 1. However, recent managerial changes at Bristol Rovers, where Steve Evans replaced Darrell Clarke following a poor run, have sparked fears that Hutchinson might be recalled during the January transfer window.
Cotterill, however, remains optimistic. “I know Isaac wants to stay here, and he’s made that clear to me on multiple occasions,” Cotterill said. “Ultimately, the final decision isn’t ours. If Bristol Rovers decide to recall him, there’s not much we can do. But with the rules stating a player can only represent two clubs in a season—and Isaac already having played for both—usually the decision falls back to the player.”

The midfielder’s relationship with Bristol Rovers’ fans has been complicated. Prior to his loan, Hutchinson faced personal abuse from a section of the supporters, leading to official condemnation from the club. Cotterill noted he hasn’t delved deeply into that situation but acknowledged it might factor into Hutchinson’s desire to stay at Cheltenham.
Looking ahead, Cheltenham prepares for a tough match against Barrow, traveling to Holker Street—a venue Cotterill hasn’t visited with the Robins since a memorable 1-1 draw during the 1998/99 season. Meanwhile, the team welcomes back Ipswich Town loanee Tommy Taylor from injury, though they face a setback with Ryan Broom ruled out for up to 12 weeks due to a hamstring tendon injury. Forward George Miller is also on the road to recovery and expected back in early January.
Despite these challenges, Cotterill remains focused on maintaining team performance and hopes to keep Hutchinson’s goal-scoring form alive as Cheltenham pushes forward in the League Two campaign.
