Cheltenham Town secured a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Rotherham United in their opening game of the League One season, marking manager Steve Cotterill’s first opening day win since taking charge of the Robins.
Reflecting on the match, Cotterill acknowledged the challenge posed by Rotherham, noting their athleticism and tactical adaptability despite reports of club turmoil. “Alex Bruce has done a good job,” Cotterill said, referencing Rotherham’s manager. “It was a tough game for us, especially as the first match of the season carries a lot of emotion and pressure at home. We didn’t quite perform as well as we can, but the grit and determination to earn three points was fantastic.”
The game featured a hydration break in the first half, soon followed by a breakthrough when Charlie McCann opened the scoring for Cheltenham. Cotterill attributed early confusion in the game to Rotherham’s switch to a back three formation, which disrupted Cheltenham’s usual pre-season preparations that had primarily involved a four at the back.

Despite some uncertainties on the pitch, goalkeeper Will was praised for his excellent performance, contributing significantly to the team’s clean sheet until the equaliser. Cotterill noted that while they had moments of good play, the focus was ultimately on achieving the win.
Regarding a missed penalty opportunity, the manager stated, “The lads said it was definitely a penalty. I haven’t reviewed it yet, but Jonathan Tomkinson was very clear it should have been awarded. Mistakes happen, though.”
Shaun McWilliams had to be substituted at half-time due to a groin injury rather than cautions, leading to a tactical reshuffle with two defensive midfielders and a number ten. Cotterill described the second half as “tricky,” but praised the team’s resilience.
After conceding an equaliser under some debate regarding the scorer, Jake Evans scored the winning goal, a special moment especially as Evans approaches his 18th birthday. He indicated a need for further strengthening in central defence and midfield but pointed to financial constraints and the natural limitations of mid-season acquisitions, particularly loans.
The manager described this summer’s work as particularly demanding but rewarding, crediting club staff such as Keith Burt and Russ Milton for their daily contributions. Among new signings, Andi Weimann was singled out for his down-to-earth nature and smooth integration into the squad with minimal preparation time.
Cotterill also shared that connecting with former players and colleagues, including Steve Bruce, Alex Bruce, Steve McClaren, and Matt Smith, provided additional enjoyment off the pitch.
