Cheltenham Town Chairman David Bloxham Addresses Takeover Timing, Cotterill’s Return, and Club’s Future at Fans’ Forum

At the recent Cheltenham Town AGM, chairman David Bloxham openly shared his thoughts on the club’s current situation and future prospects. Reflecting on the takeover by new owner Mike Garlick, Bloxham expressed a wish that the deal had been completed “five to six weeks earlier” to better support the club.

Joined by financial director Clive Gowing and chief scout Russell Milton, Bloxham addressed fans’ questions, focusing on Garlick’s investment, the much-anticipated return of manager Steve Cotterill, and challenges facing the club’s academy.

Cotterill rejoined the Robins in late September, marking his second managerial stint 23 years after his first. Bloxham confirmed the thorough recruitment process behind his appointment, emphasizing that while Cotterill was a favored candidate, other options were considered. “We knew Steve was available, and he had shown strong interest by attending games, but the decision followed a full interview process. Another good candidate was considered, but ultimately, Steve was the right choice,” Bloxham explained.

Mike Garlick officially became involved with Cheltenham Town in late July, alongside his wife Alison, taking on shareholder roles. His investment followed discussions with several prospective backers, with the club prioritizing financial stability. Much attention has been on potential upgrades to the main stand at the EV Charger Points Stadium. However, Bloxham clarified that improvement plans extend beyond the stand alone.

“There wasn’t a set figure that had to be invested immediately, nor was all funding earmarked for the stand,” he said. “We anticipate upgrades in multiple areas. The training ground, being the team’s workplace, requires significant funding to attract and develop top players. It’s about balancing priorities rather than focusing solely on one project.”

Gowing appreciated the positive impact of Garlick’s financial backing, highlighting the alignment between the chairman’s ambitions and the club’s fiscal goals. “It’s been a great fit; Mr. Garlick wants to see financial success alongside football progress,” he commented.

The club’s academy also featured in the discussion, responding to concerns about its role as a revenue source. Gowing acknowledged the competitive landscape, noting the club’s position near academies like Aston Villa and Birmingham City. He pointed out several recent successful youth departures—including players like Will Armitage and Luke Thomas—who moved on to larger clubs, generating valuable fees and sell-on opportunities.

“Freddy Willcox’s breakthrough year is promising, though it remains challenging for younger players to bridge the gap to first-team football at this stage," Gowing stated. “If young prospects are ready, they often transfer away to teams with higher levels. We’re working to strengthen that transition.”

On the field, Cheltenham currently sit 23rd in the league table after a narrow 3-2 loss to Tranmere last weekend. Looking ahead, the Robins prepare to host Bristol Rovers at Whaddon Road, with Darrell Clarke, a former manager, returning to the stadium this Saturday.
