Cheltenham Town Boss Steve Cotterill Reflects on Positives Despite MK Dons Defeat

Cheltenham Town manager Steve Cotterill focused on the positives after his side’s narrow 3-2 defeat to MK Dons, highlighting the progress and resilience shown despite facing one of the strongest teams in the league.

“There are plenty of positives today,” Cotterill said. “We dominated possession and competed well against the league’s strongest side. Although the result didn’t go our way, the players showed determination and quality."

Cotterill expressed frustration over a controversial first goal for MK Dons, disputing the corner decision: “It was so tight and the lad had no way of knowing it was a corner. Moments like that go against us but we have to keep pushing."

Jake Bickerstaff’s performance caught attention after scoring a vital goal. Cotterill praised the young forward’s energy and versatility, saying: “Bickers has improved massively and I believe we will see his best in the coming season. He’s worked hard in various attacking roles and is a vital part of our squad.”

The manager also welcomed the contributions of substitutes Harry Ashfield and Cole Deeming. “Cole’s left-footed pass was the highlight of the game—truly outstanding,” he noted.

Isaac Hutchinson’s goal on his first game back uplifted the team’s spirit. Cotterill added, “Isaac showed his technical ability with a superb finish and it’s great to see him back scoring.”

Reflecting on the defensive moments that led to MK Dons’ goals, Cotterill acknowledged the need for improvement but remained optimistic: “We can be more composed during key moments, especially in the final minutes, but the overall performance was encouraging."

Cotterill highlighted the challenge of balancing possession-based football with defensive solidity. “We want to develop a style where we control the game but remain mindful of counter-attacks. It’s about teaching the players multiple ways to play while keeping our club’s footballing philosophy intact.”

On the squad’s strength and competition for places, Cotterill said: “We now have a stronger squad with good competition in midfield and attack. It’s about making the right choices for each game and ensuring the players are ready when called upon.”

Looking ahead, the manager remains hopeful that continued commitment and development will translate into better results. “If we maintain this level of play, results will come. The progress so far has been promising.”

Regarding injured midfielder Ryan Broom, Cotterill confirmed that he is nearing the end of his rehabilitation, which will add depth to the squad.

Despite the disappointment of defeat, Cotterill’s message was clear: focus on growth, resilience, and the journey ahead. “Today we must look beyond the scoreline and build on the good things we saw on the pitch.”
