Cheltenham Town manager Steve Cotterill expressed mixed feelings after his team’s 1-1 draw against Harrogate Town. Despite the disappointment of not securing a win, Cotterill praised the players’ determination and hard work during a demanding week.
“From our point of view, I thought we looked leggy today,” Cotterill admitted. “Tuesday’s game really took a lot out of us. It was our third match this week, while they had just two. That lack of sharpness was evident, but it was expected given the schedule.” Cotterill noted the energy and tactics of Harrogate Town, who are known for dropping back and seizing counterattack opportunities. “The goal came from one of those counterattacks after a mistake from us,” he said. “We nearly got back to defend it, and the penalty decision against us was debatable.”
Cotterill highlighted Jake Bickerstaff’s goal as a positive moment, though he wished it had been the winning strike. “Jake deserved it, and it’s great for him to finally score. He did well to follow up after the ball hit the post.” The manager acknowledged that the overall performance lacked flair but was full of honest, hard work from his squad.

Goalkeeper Joe Day made two crucial saves to keep Cheltenham in the game. “Joe has been solid since I’ve been here, and he delivered again today,” Cotterill remarked. Despite the disappointment of not winning, Cotterill took pride in the team’s resilience. “If someone had offered me four points from the last two games at the start of the week, I’d have gladly taken it. The worst result today would have been a loss.”
Regarding penalty appeals, Cotterill was uncertain about one incident involving Rob Cundy but maintained that the penalty awarded to Harrogate was harsh. “The referee seemed quick to make that decision, and I plan to discuss it with him.”
Cheltenham’s point tally now stands at 17 from 10 games, nearing playoff form. Cotterill credited the entire football club’s staff and players for their efforts during a challenging period involving staff changes. “Everyone has worked incredibly hard, including our new kit man Gerry Oldham, who’s been fantastic in organising things.”
On player movements, Cotterill confirmed that Lee Angol had left the club, seeking regular football elsewhere. “We had a good chat, and I wish him all the best.”
Lastly, Cotterill acknowledged the ongoing search for a new analyst, praising the current candidate from the university but noting that interviews are still underway. “Days like today will eventually turn into wins if we keep working hard. I’m proud of everyone at the club, including the supporters who remained fantastic despite the flat result.”
