Cheltenham Town manager Steve Cotterill shared his thoughts following his side’s 3-1 home defeat to Charlton Athletic in a challenging pre-season friendly.
Reflecting on the match, Cotterill noted that although the team played some of their best football moments in the first half, determination increased noticeably in the second half. “We matched them in the game for about 20 minutes and were the better team during that spell,” he said. However, a mistake by defender Robbie Cundy led to a goal that put Cheltenham on the back foot. Cotterill acknowledged Cundy’s excellent form overall but admitted the error was costly.
He complimented Charlton’s clinical finishing, emphasising the quality of their players, many of whom attract significant transfer interest. “Those goals were exceptional finishes, worth quite a few million pounds, with bids already coming in,” Cotterill commented.

Despite the defeat, the Cheltenham boss praised his players' work rate and commitment. The team showed increased determination in the second half, winning more duels and resisting the physical challenge posed by their opponents. Cotterill highlighted the intensity of Charlton’s high-speed running throughout the match and acknowledged the physical toll it would take on the players.
Cotterill also welcomed the opportunity to give young players Kirsten Otchere and Favour Onukwuli game time, recognising the importance of rotation and managing momentum during pre-season. He was similarly pleased with goalkeeper Wyll Stanway’s performance, despite a few nervy moments, hailing his potential as a future asset to the club.
Looking ahead, Cotterill acknowledged the tough decisions he will face regarding team selection and hopes to finalise a strong starting eleven for the coming matches. He also noted the possibility of further squad additions but emphasised the need for careful selection rather than indiscriminate recruitment.
On the new attacking signings and squad development, Cotterill remained open, indicating plans will crystallise in due course. On ambitions for the season, he half-jokingly stated that improvement on last season’s 18th-place finish would be the target.
Cotterill praised Joe Tomlinson’s versatility and the quality of his delivery, especially the assist for George Miller’s goal from a corner. He acknowledged other players returning to fitness and readiness for the season ahead, though noted a setback for James Wilson with a calf injury.
Overall, Cotterill expressed satisfaction with the team’s progress during pre-season and optimism for the upcoming campaign. “We’ve done well so far, it’s been tough but I like the look of us,” he concluded.
