Steve Cotterill reflected on Cheltenham Town’s hard-fought 2-1 victory over Chesterfield, drawing comparisons to a Muhammad Ali-style display of resilience and grit. Despite recognising Chesterfield as the better team on the day, Cotterill praised his squad’s effort and team spirit in overcoming a challenging match.
“If they weren’t fit, couldn’t run or lack team spirit, we would have been beaten today,” Cotterill said. “They have a couple of years ahead of us and are likely to finish near the top. That’s the standard we must aim for, playing at that level every week.”
Cotterill acknowledged moments of nervousness after taking the lead but appreciated the way his team stood firm. “It’s been a tough period, and the lads deserved a couple of days off to clear their heads. Although we’ve beaten one of the best teams in the league, the players were still disappointed with their performance. Not every game is easy; sometimes we have to endure some pain, as we did today.”
