Cheltenham Town manager Michael Flynn provided an insightful update following their recent 2-0 defeat to Worcester City, highlighting squad development, transfer priorities, and the club’s ongoing preparations ahead of the new season.
Despite the loss, Flynn remained upbeat, praising the experience gained by playing 30 different players, including several youngsters and trialists who had never played together before. “We had no fit centre-backs or left-backs today, so there is still a lot to do,” he admitted, adding that the main focus remains securing defensive reinforcements.
Flynn revealed encouraging news from a recent meeting with prospective new owner Mike Garlick, whose football club ownership experience promises positive developments. “I left enthused and positive,” Flynn stated, commending the hard work of the club’s board in managing the ownership transition. He hopes the process will be finalized soon to provide additional support in the coming weeks.

Addressing squad management, Flynn explained that some key players were rested or unavailable due to minor injuries, including Jordan Thomas, Matty Taylor, Benno Bennett, Robbie Cundy, Jude-Boyd Arkell, and Joe Day. This gave opportunities to trialists and younger players like Tom King, Liam Kinsella, and Luke Young, who all impressed with their efforts.
Regarding trialists, Flynn was candid that only those who truly stood out would be considered, emphasizing the high standards expected. The manager believes Tom King, in particular, has the potential to make a significant impact this season but stresses the need for consistent performances during pre-season before final decisions are made.
Loan moves are a possibility for several young players such as Cam Walters, Harry Tustin, Sopuru Obieri, and Freddy Willcox to gain valuable first-team experience. Flynn also addressed the status of senior players, confirming George Miller is not for sale without a transfer fee, while Ibrahim Bakare, Harrison Sohna, and Matty Taylor are available for transfer as they seek more regular playing time.
While Flynn is monitoring goalkeeping options, signing a third keeper is currently a low priority given the squad’s needs elsewhere. He is content with Mamadou Diallo as backup for the upcoming season opener.
