Cheltenham Town manager Michael Flynn has openly discussed the recruitment difficulties faced during the summer transfer window as the League Two season approaches. With just under two weeks until kickoff, the Robins have only secured three new signings: defender Robbie Cundy, forward Lee Angol, and left-back Taine Anderson on loan from Bristol City.
Despite these additions, Flynn acknowledges the squad remains thin, particularly in key positions. “We are short on players who can break into the first team,” he said following a 3-0 friendly loss to League One side Wycombe Wanderers.
Flynn is prioritizing strengthening the defense and attack, aiming to bring in a permanent left-back as well as additional centre-backs and forwards. However, financial constraints and competing options for players have made acquisition difficult. “Sometimes we can’t afford them, or they have other options. But we’ll continue to work hard to improve us,” Flynn stated.

The club recently parted ways with veteran striker Matty Taylor, who joined Salisbury FC. While his departure helps ease the budget, Flynn emphasizes the challenge of replacing a goal scorer. “He’s had a fantastic career and was no problem for me,” Flynn noted. “It helps budget-wise, but we still need someone who scores goals—and that’s not cheap.”
Several young players, including striker Sopuruchukwu Obieri and defender Cam Walters, have been loaned out to gain experience, with more loan moves expected. Flynn explained, “They’re not ready for League Two football yet. If we go down that road, it’ll be a long old season.”
Financial discipline remains paramount, though the club’s prospective new owner Mike Garlick is set to attend Wednesday’s home friendly against Swansea City. This takeover could potentially increase the playing budget before the transfer window closes.
“I am sticking to the budget I have been given and will continue to do so until I am told otherwise,” Flynn said. He remains patient and hopeful, citing last season’s late acquisitions of George Miller and Sam Stubbs as positive examples.
In team news, right-back Arkell Jude-Boyd is expected to miss the Swansea friendly due to a hamstring injury. Meanwhile, transfer-listed players Ibrahim Bakare and Harrison Sohna have attracted interest, with Flynn leaving the decision of their future in the players’ hands.
Looking ahead, Cheltenham will test themselves against Championship side Bristol City at the EV Charger Points Stadium on Friday evening.
