Cheltenham Town Appoints James Watts as New Managing Director

Cheltenham Town Football Club has officially named James Watts as their new managing director. Watts will join the Robins in mid-June, moving from his current role as chief commercial officer at Swindon Town. His previous experience also includes key positions at Hereford and Newport County AFC.

Owner Mike Garlick expressed strong confidence in the appointment, stating, “After a thorough recruitment process, James was the standout candidate. He brings not only a deep understanding of the commercial side of football but also exceptional communication and man management skills. I am sure he will be a tremendous asset as we push the club forward.”

James Watts, based in Newport, shared his enthusiasm about the move: “I am delighted to join Cheltenham Town, a club with significant upward momentum. The strong community spirit here is inspiring, and I am eager to collaborate with the fans, board, staff, partners, and sponsors to help elevate this club’s future.”

In addition to the new managing director, Cheltenham Town has appointed Paul Gibson as head groundsman. Work is scheduled to start on the playing surface at Whaddon Road this Monday. A new sprinkler system will be added at the training ground, alongside refurbishments to the canteen, showers, and an expanded kit room.

Further upgrades at Whaddon Road include replacing the remaining wooden seats in the old main stand with plastic or hospitality-padded seats. The main bar is being transformed into a hospitality area, complemented by a marquee fanzone in the car park. These improvements reflect Cheltenham Town’s commitment to enhancing the experience for players and fans alike.
