A poignant tribute has appeared in Cheltenham as street artist Andy Dice Davies honors Jim Davis, the beloved 73-year-old pensioner who died after a violent incident near the Waitrose in Honeybourne Way. Known affectionately as ‘Lord Jim,’ Mr. Davis passed away on April 10, two days after being hospitalized following a serious assault reported to Gloucestershire police on April 8.
Two teenagers, aged 16 and 17, were arrested in connection with the case. While no further action has been taken against the younger suspect, the 17-year-old remains on police bail as investigations continue.
Andy Dice Davies, director of the Cheltenham Paint Festival and a well-known figure in the town’s public art scene, painted a heartfelt mural of Mr. Davis on a wall beneath the Millennium Bridge, close to the site of the incident. Sharing his work on Facebook, Davies described Mr. Davis’s death as “a sad and needless waste of life” and expressed his honor at being allowed by the family to memorialize him so near the place where he passed.

The artwork is inspired by a photograph provided by Mr. Davis’s family to accompany their emotional tribute. The family described ‘Jimmy’ as a kind and compassionate man who was a motorcycle enthusiast, a gifted storyteller, and someone who brought joy and warmth to those around him. They emphasized the deep impact he had on many lives and the void left by his passing.
The community’s grief is palpable. Near the bridge, a floral tribute has been placed with a note lamenting, “R.I.P, Our society should be better than this.” Social media comments reflect the collective sorrow and respect for Mr. Davis, with many recalling his kindness and generosity.
Gloucestershire police’s major crime investigation team is actively investigating the circumstances of Mr. Davis’s death and continues to appeal for any witnesses or information that might aid their inquiries.
