Cheltenham Residents Raise Concerns Over Expansion of Travellers’ Site Amid Fears of Property Devaluation

Cheltenham Borough Council has approved plans to expand a travellers’ site on Stud Mill Lane in Charlton Kings, sparking concern among local residents. The site, previously used for horse keeping at Castle Dream, is set to increase from one to two mobile homes and allow up to two touring caravans.

Originally approved in September, the development includes hardstanding for caravans, a utility block, a dog run, and fencing. At a recent planning committee meeting on June 19, revised plans to raise the number of mobile homes to two and increase caravan storage were debated after receiving around 25 objections from nearby residents.

Critics expressed worries about the impact on the surrounding Cotswold National Landscape, potential strain on the sewage system, increased traffic, noise, pollution, and most notably, the possible devaluation of neighbouring properties. Charlton Kings Parish Council formally objected, leading the case to be referred to the planning committee.

Addressing concerns about sewage capacity, Councillor Simon Wheeler questioned whether the existing septic tank could accommodate the additional units. A planning officer responded that private sector housing authorities had already investigated prior concerns, which were addressed through mitigation works completed in 2024. Since then, no further objections have been registered, and the issue is considered resolved.

Despite the objections, councillors voted unanimously to approve the expansion. Conditions include limiting the number of touring caravans stored on site to two, ensuring control over the scale of the development.

The decision reflects a balance between accommodating traveller communities and addressing local residents’ concerns, though unease among Cheltenham’s community remains palpable.
