Cheltenham Racecourse Cancels Remaining Season Fixtures for Drainage Upgrades

Cheltenham Racecourse has announced the cancellation of the final three fixtures of the current season to undertake essential upgrades to the drainage system along the home straight. This decision follows a significant drainage failure earlier this year when a hole appeared during the January meeting, later identified as a collapsed drain beneath the track.

In response, emergency repairs were made in time for the Cheltenham Festival to proceed without issue. However, the two-day fixture scheduled for April 15 and 16, along with the Hunter Chase card set for May 1, have now been cancelled.

After thorough consultations with drainage experts and internal teams, racecourse management determined that early spring — when the ground retains some moisture — is the optimal time to carry out this critical maintenance. This approach will enable faster ground recovery ahead of the next season.

Jon Pullin, Clerk of the Course, emphasized their commitment to providing the finest jump racing surface. He explained, “Over the wet winter, we’ve faced a number of track challenges. With professional assessment, we identified drainage improvements needed to prevent issues like the hole that appeared on Festival Trials Day and other difficulties on the course. We typically schedule such drainage work at season’s end, but after two especially dry summers, advancing this project was the right choice.”

Due to these cancellations, four key races have been rescheduled to nearby courses — Market Rasen, Warwick, and Sandown — with the entire Hunter Chase fixture moving to Warwick on its original date.

Chief Executive Guy Lavender noted, “Cheltenham is the premier home of jump racing. Our priority remains delivering exceptional facilities and race conditions. Though we share the disappointment of our fans over the season’s early conclusion, preserving the track’s quality for future events is paramount.”

All general admission ticket holders for the cancelled meetings will receive automatic refunds, and those with hospitality bookings will be contacted individually. Members and annual boxholders will be informed directly regarding compensation and additional reciprocal race meetings.

This proactive approach ensures Cheltenham Racecourse can continue to host first-class jump racing, safeguarding the sport’s future at one of its most iconic venues.
