Cheltenham Racecourse is set to welcome over 30,000 visitors for the upcoming November Meeting, taking place from Friday, November 14, through Sunday, November 16. This prestigious event not only highlights the town’s rich racing heritage but also provides a substantial economic boost to local businesses across hospitality, retail, and transportation sectors.
To ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for both visitors and residents, Cheltenham Borough Council, Gloucestershire Constabulary, and event partners have introduced a series of enhanced operational and safety measures. These include increased safety patrols, additional toilet facilities, and rigorous taxi compliance checks aimed at curbing illegal hire services.
One of the event’s key priorities is public wellbeing, with special attention given to women’s safety. Licensed venues will continue the use of the ‘Ask for Angela/Clive’ schemes, offering discreet support for anyone feeling vulnerable.
Responding to community feedback, extra facilities and patrols are scheduled for Friday daytime and Saturday evening, targeting areas where anti-social behaviour concerns have arisen in the past. The visible presence of council and police personnel will help foster a welcoming atmosphere, supported by Cheltenham Racecourse’s ‘Love Our Turf’ initiative, which promotes respectful behaviour and discourages inappropriate conduct among attendees.
Cllr Victoria Atherstone, Cabinet Member for Safety and Communities, emphasized the balancing act between supporting Cheltenham’s internationally renowned racing events and minimizing disruption to residents: “Cheltenham’s horse racing draws visitors from around the world, benefiting local businesses tremendously. At the same time, we are committed to tackling anti-social behaviour and reducing inconvenience to our communities. This year, we have implemented stronger measures and will continue refining our approach for future events.”
Inspector Steven Benbow from Gloucestershire Constabulary noted that ongoing improvements stem from careful consideration of public feedback: “Each year, we build on lessons learned to enhance our safety services. We encourage racegoers and residents alike to report any incidents they witness, as community input is vital to keeping Cheltenham safe during the race week.”
In line with its zero-tolerance policy toward illegal taxi operations, the council urges visitors to use only licensed taxis and private hire vehicles. It is strongly recommended to pre-book transport or use official taxi ranks, where vehicles display a roof sign and Cheltenham licence plate. Collaborative vehicle compliance checks will be carried out by licensing officers from Cheltenham Borough Council, with support from Tewkesbury and Wolverhampton councils and Avon and Somerset Constabulary.
Cheltenham Racecourse and its partners remain committed to delivering an event that is not only safe and enjoyable but also economically beneficial for the town and its residents.
