Christ Church Pre-School Playgroup in Malvern Road, Cheltenham, has once again secured a ‘Good’ rating from its latest Ofsted inspection, thanks to its warm and supportive learning environment. The pre-school, serving children aged two to four, was highly commended for its nurturing atmosphere, strong relationships, and tailored support, especially for children with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND).
Inspectors applauded the playgroup’s emphasis on creating a safe and caring space where children eagerly greet staff each day, reflecting the trusting bonds that have been built. The welcoming approach to new starters is gentle and sensitive, with staff carefully adapting routines to suit individual children’s needs and comfort.

Support for communication and SEND was singled out as a particular strength. Staff use patient, clear explanations and repetition of key words, helping younger children and those with additional needs to improve their understanding and speech.
Interactions between staff and children are warm and involve meaningful conversations, encouraging older children to express themselves confidently and develop their social skills. The playgroup also fosters community links through partnerships with local colleges and introducing activities such as ‘mystery reader’ sessions, which ignite children’s interest in books and storytelling.
Children gain growing independence by serving snacks, pouring drinks, and tidying up, equipping them with essential life skills.
While the report acknowledged many strengths, it also identified areas for improvement. Specifically, staff need to better engage older children to sustain their concentration and challenge their learning during both free play and structured activities. Consistency in offering stimulating learning environments for the older age group remains a development priority.
Leadership at Christ Church Playgroup was described as effective and dedicated to continuous improvement. Safeguarding practices are robust, creating a secure environment where children’s wellbeing is the priority.
Play leader Vicki West expressed her satisfaction with the Ofsted outcome, highlighting the inspector’s considerate approach to staff wellbeing during the inspection process. She proudly noted the playgroup’s reputation for supporting special educational needs and praised the personalized curriculum aimed at helping each child’s development.
Committee chair Rev Simon Heron echoed these sentiments, emphasizing the team’s commitment to providing excellent care and education. He welcomed the constructive recommendations as opportunities for further growth and development.
