Cheltenham Named Second Best Large Town in the UK, Just Behind Blackpool

Cheltenham, the charming town in Gloucestershire, has been ranked the second best large town in the UK by destination expert Chris Moss. Coming very close to the top of the list, Cheltenham impressed with its exceptional blend of history, culture, and elegant architecture.

Compiled as part of the government’s initiative to select the first UK Town of Culture for 2028, Chris Moss’s list evaluated the 25 most populous towns in England. While towns such as Telford, Reading, Swindon, and Poole featured, none matched Cheltenham’s outstanding score of nine out of ten.

Home to approximately 118,836 residents, Cheltenham’s appeal lies significantly in its historical heritage and vibrant cultural scene. The Montpellier district, in particular, received high praise for its refined atmosphere and aesthetic appeal.

Moss describes Cheltenham as “the poshest of our 25 towns,” highlighting its impressive assets—from the elegant residences in the Suffolks and Tivoli areas to the sophisticated Montpellier district. In the 19th century, Montpellier Spa was a renowned destination where the wealthy came to enjoy the town’s mineral waters.

Green spaces like Montpellier Gardens and Imperial Gardens are more than just parks; they serve as lively festival venues that celebrate the town’s artistic spirit. Cheltenham boasts dedicated venues for jazz, science, music, and literature, cementing its position as a cultural hub.

The Promenade, built in the 1820s, offers a grand and airy avenue lined with cafés, bistros, delis, and restaurants that add to the town’s welcoming charm. The Wilson Museum is another highlight, celebrated for its Arts & Crafts collection as well as notable Flemish art.

An intriguing hidden gem mentioned by Moss is the Holst Victorian House on Clarence Road, a testament to Cheltenham’s rich historical tapestry.

While Cheltenham earned near-perfect marks, it narrowly missed the top spot, which went to Blackpool with a score of nine and a half out of ten.
