Cheltenham Named Second Best Large Town in the UK, Just Behind Blackpool

Cheltenham, a historic Gloucestershire town, has been ranked the second best large town in the UK by destination expert Chris Moss. The ranking, which evaluated the 25 most populous towns in England, saw Cheltenham achieve an impressive nine out of ten score, placing it just behind Blackpool, which secured the top spot with a 9.5 rating.

The list was created as part of the government’s initiative to select the first UK Town of Culture in 2028, highlighting towns with standout cultural and historical credentials. Cheltenham, home to 118,836 residents, received high praise for its rich heritage and vibrant cultural scene, particularly spotlighting the elegant Montpellier district.

Chris Moss described Cheltenham as “the poshest of our 25 towns,” noting its “fetching assets” ranging from the refined homes in the Suffolks and Tivoli areas to the gracious charm of Montpellier. Once famed in the 19th century as a spa destination where the wealthy gathered to enjoy mineral waters, Montpellier remains a cultural hub. Its gardens, including Montpellier and Imperial Gardens, serve as lush green spaces and popular venues for festivals.

The town thrives with dedicated showcases for jazz, science, music, and literature, contributing to its vibrant cultural identity. The Promenade, a grand 1820s avenue, is lined with an abundance of cafés, bistros, delis, and restaurants that complement the town’s elegant atmosphere.

Cheltenham’s cultural offerings extend to The Wilson museum, renowned for its Arts & Crafts collection and Flemish art. Another hidden gem highlighted by Moss is the Holst Victorian House on Clarence Road, a secret sight that underscores the town’s unique character.

Although Cheltenham missed out on the top spot by a narrow margin to Blackpool, its high standing reflects a town rich in history, culture, and charm that continues to captivate residents and visitors alike.
