Cheltenham Morrisons supermarket receives one-star food hygiene rating

The Morrisons supermarket on Caernarvon Road in Cheltenham has been awarded a one-star food hygiene rating following an inspection by the Food Standards Agency (FSA) in January 2026. The report states that significant improvements are required in the store’s food safety and hygiene practices.

According to the FSA, major enhancements are needed concerning the hygienic handling of food, encompassing areas such as preparation, cooking, re-heating, cooling, and storage. Equally, considerable advancements are necessary in the supermarket’s food safety management to ensure that the food sold or served is safe for consumption and that staff are adequately knowledgeable about food safety standards.

Although the store’s cleanliness and the condition of its building and facilities were deemed generally satisfactory, the overall rating reflects concerns raised following a customer complaint. The shopper reported buying frozen foods that were found to be soft and partially defrosted, describing the freezer as warm and the top shelf products in a similar deteriorated state. Upon raising the issue with a store employee, the customer felt her concerns were dismissed.

UK food safety regulations require frozen foods to be stored at temperatures of -18°C or below. However, the inspection revealed freezers operating at temperatures far above this standard, including one at -0.4°C and frozen cod fillets at -1.1°C. As a result, the store had to dispose of 431 items, including popular products such as Morrisons Savers Chicken Nuggets and Young’s Flipper Dippers.

A spokesperson for Morrisons stated that immediate action was taken to address the concerns following the inspection. They emphasised the company’s commitment to food hygiene, noting that the report reflects past issues and that the store is working towards a re-inspection to improve its rating.
