Cheltenham Library to Close for Over Two Weeks for Crucial Safety Upgrades

Cheltenham’s main library on Clarence Street will be closed for 19 days starting Thursday, May 14, to undergo vital building works, including the safe removal of asbestos discovered during earlier maintenance inspections. The library is scheduled to reopen on Monday, June 1, though the closure may be extended if additional repairs are necessary.

Gloucestershire County Council has arranged the closure well in advance to carry out the work safely and minimize disruption to library users. Despite the temporary closure of the main building, many library services will continue uninterrupted. The Children’s Library will remain open for families and young visitors, and adults can still collect reserved books from there throughout the closure period.

Library patrons are encouraged to visit nearby Cheltenham libraries such as Charlton Kings, Hesters Way, Prestbury, and the Oakley Interactive Space. Additionally, all items can be requested, renewed, and managed conveniently online via the Gloucestershire Libraries website.

Cllr Paul Hodgkinson, cabinet member responsible for libraries, acknowledged the inconvenience but emphasized the necessity of the closure: “Cheltenham Library is a vital community resource, and these essential works will ensure the building remains safe and accessible for the future. We are committed to maintaining key services, especially for families, and providing clear information about alternative options during this period.”
