Cheltenham High Street Refurbishment Raises Concerns

Cheltenham MP Max Wilkinson has expressed concerns over the design and workmanship of the resurfacing of the Strand area of Cheltenham High Street. He has been a vocal advocate for an end to the practice of “tarmac cowpat” repairs in Cheltenham, an issue arising from the replacement of stone slabs or pavement with asphalt by utility firms and highways workers.

The resurfacing was part of Gloucestershire County Council’s efforts to enhance the town center, and it was finished with a natural-colored asphalt, akin to that in Cambray Place. However, there are worries about the quality of the work, with noticeable “ripples” and imprints from work boots in various areas. Furthermore, the color has significantly faded in areas heavily frequented since its completion before the Cheltenham Festival in March.

Wilkinson emphasized the importance of Cheltenham’s appearance in preserving its heritage and appeal. He also stressed the need for a comprehensive vision for the town center following the reorganization of local government in Gloucestershire.

A spokesperson for Gloucestershire County Council stated that the resurfacing was done to modernize the town center and was carried out in collaboration with Cheltenham Borough Council to align with the town’s vision.
