For the fifth consecutive year, Cheltenham resident Dave Bath has championed a heartwarming annual tradition that brings festive joy to children facing hardship. What started as a simple Facebook plea has blossomed into a major community-led initiative, now collecting 880 selection boxes—the largest tally yet.
Dave’s journey began five years ago when he noticed some local children had no presents to open at Christmas. “I thought, let’s see if anybody will help out,” he recalls. From that initial request, the Cheltenham Community Christmas Selection Box Appeal was born, steadily growing as more individuals, groups, and businesses joined the cause.
This year’s appeal saw outstanding contributions including 170 boxes from the Cheltenham Round Table, continued backing from Cheltenham Borough Council, and significant efforts by volunteers like Marisa Regan. Local supporter Gary Goodhall also helped raise over 200 boxes through a charity music night.

The selection boxes are distributed to families facing financial challenges and children with disabilities through a network of trusted local organisations such as Maggie’s, Cotswold RDA, Springbank Community Centre Food Pantry, and several children’s centres and food banks. These partners ensure the gifts reach those who need them most.
“The joy on the children’s faces when we deliver the boxes makes it all worthwhile,” Dave shares. His dedication earned him the Cheltenham Medal of Honour in 2024, a testament to his impact.
Although this year’s festive appeal has concluded, Dave remains committed to helping families year-round. He also leads an Easter Egg Appeal, which collected around 630 Easter eggs last year, continuing to spread kindness well beyond Christmas.
Dave encourages the community to stay tuned through his Facebook page for future opportunities to contribute. “The Cheltenham community’s generosity is truly inspiring,” he says, exemplifying the spirit of giving that defines the season.
