Cheese Rolling Organisers Plead for Proper Parking Ahead of Iconic Event

Organisers of the world-famous Cheese Rolling event at Cooper’s Hill in Brockworth have issued an urgent appeal to attendees ahead of Monday’s race on May 25. They are “literally begging” spectators to park correctly and use designated parking areas to prevent the usual congestion that frustrates local residents each year.

In a heartfelt message on the official Coopers Hill Cheese Roll Facebook page, organisers emphasized the need for cooperation due to repeated complaints about parking chaos. “The whole area comes to a standstill massively so we need you to listen to us please,” the post stated.

The organisers reminded everyone that there is no parking available on the hill itself. Instead, visitors must use one of the official parking zones listed by the event, which charge fees of £5 or £10. After parking, attendees should be prepared for a 30 to 45-minute walk to the hill. Importantly, fans do not need to be right by the hill to enjoy the event; the surrounding fields offer excellent views, especially for families with children. Additionally, the event will be livestreamed by the BBC for those who prefer to watch from home.

The annual Cheese Rolling event, traditionally held over the Spring Bank Holiday, draws competitors worldwide who race down the steep 180-metre Cooper’s Hill chasing a nine-pound wheel of Double Gloucester cheese. These wheels can reach speeds of up to 70-80 mph, making the race thrilling but hazardous. Injuries, including broken bones, are common, and everyone participates at their own risk. Competitors aged 18 and over simply need to show up at the top of the hill to take part.

Last year’s winners included German YouTuber Tom Kopke, who won the first men’s race for the second consecutive year, and local resident Luke Preece, who clinched victory in the second men’s race. Ava Sender Logan made an impressive debut by winning the women’s competition.

With races kicking off from noon, organisers hope the strong message about responsible parking will help keep the tradition running smoothly and maintain good relations with the Brockworth community.
