Channel 5’s Clive Owen Shares Heartfelt Reflections on Future Farming Role

Clive Owen, beloved star of Channel 5’s Our Farm Next Door, recently shared a poignant moment reflecting on his future in farming, sparking speculation about his potential retirement. During a heartfelt scene in the series, Clive spoke candidly while working alongside his sons, Reuben and Miles, repairing a gate in preparation for the livestock season.

“I don’t know how many lambing times I have left in me,” he admitted thoughtfully. “These lads will get the benefit of this gate for a long time to come, hopefully.”

Following a challenging period after his split from ex-wife Amanda in June 2022, Clive has now joined forces with her on an exciting new television project focused on renovating a farmhouse in the Yorkshire Dales.

This isn’t the first hint Clive, aged 72, has dropped about stepping back from active farming. His eldest son Reuben, 21, is already taking on more duties and stars in his own Channel 5 series, Reuben Owen: Life in the Dales.

In the latest episode aired May 27, Clive’s younger son Miles, 17, also expressed strong enthusiasm for farming. Miles shared his growing involvement on the family farm, from collecting eggs to feeding animals, and is keen to collaborate more closely with Reuben on the farm’s operations.

“I’ve talked to Reuben about helping more with his digging business,” Miles explained. “I wouldn’t mind at all.” However, he noted the importance of balancing responsibilities: “Dad’s getting on and slowing down a bit, so I’ve got to help him when it’s needed.”

Clive’s remarks about “passing the baton” ring true as the next generation steps up. Reflecting on his sons’ maturing roles, Clive said, “They’re grown-up, these lads, and it’s good for them to take over these jobs. Miles is a young man now, so the mowing is for him.”

He concluded with warmth and optimism: “It’s time to pass on the baton and let them do more and more. I am here to watch over them and annoy them, and we will get there in the end.”

Reuben Owen: Life in the Dales airs Tuesdays at 8pm on Channel 5, with all episodes available on My5.
