Champagne from Charles and Diana’s 1981 Royal Wedding Set to Fetch £70,000 at Auction

An exceptionally rare bottle of Dom Pérignon champagne, served at the wedding of Prince Charles and Princess Diana in 1981, is poised to fetch up to £70,000 at auction. The royal couple’s marriage, dubbed the “wedding of the century,” was celebrated in London’s St Paul’s Cathedral before a global audience of around 750 million.

This remarkable magnum bottle is a Vintage 1961 Dom Pérignon, produced in extremely limited quantities specifically for the official wedding festivities and select guests. Danish auction house Bruun Rasmussen is currently offering the bottle, estimating its value between €67,000 and €80,000 (£58,870 to £70,293).

Thomas Rosendahl, head of wine at Bruun Rasmussen, emphasizes the bottle’s significance: “Vintage 1961 is one of Dom Pérignon’s most coveted vintages. This special edition was created exclusively to mark the historic royal occasion, making it extraordinarily rare. It represents both a prestigious Dom Pérignon vintage and a unique artifact of cultural history.”

The champagne will be auctioned on December 11, attracting interest from distinguished wine collectors and enthusiasts of royal memorabilia alike. Despite the grandeur of the wedding, Charles and Diana’s marriage ended in separation in 1992 and divorce in 1996, but this bottle endures as a symbol of that iconic moment.
