The Valley Playing Field in Chalford, near Stroud, will reopen to the public on Friday, 28 August, after a comprehensive investigation concluded that the risk to human health is very low.
The playing field was closed in July last year after reports emerged that mole activity was bringing suspected asbestos material to the surface. Chalford Parish Council acted as a precautionary measure, closing the site to allow for further investigation into the presence and potential hazards of asbestos.
According to the council, the asbestos-containing material, originating from Fibrecrete used to level the site in 1946, includes chrysotile (white), crocidolite (blue), and amosite (brown) asbestos lying beneath the surface. Members were initially unaware of this presence until surface material was disturbed by mole activity.

Prolonged exposure to asbestos can cause serious health issues, including asbestosis, a rare and incurable lung condition. However, after a detailed assessment reviewed by Stroud District Council’s environmental health team, the playing field has been classified as category 4-the lowest risk category.
The council stated that chrysotile asbestos is found at the surface in molehills, but the level of fibre release does not pose a significant risk of harm. They expressed relief and delight at the findings, acknowledging that the closure during the lengthy investigation was frustrating but necessary.
To further reduce any potential risks, the parish council has purchased a new mower designed to lower airborne fibre levels and discourage mole activity. Preparations are underway, with reopening planned for the end of August.
Chalford’s Green Party councillor, Tricia Watson, praised the parish council’s thoroughness and collaboration with district council officials and contaminated land specialists. She acknowledged the delays but emphasised that the final outcome is the right one, ensuring public safety.
Residents can now look forward to using the Valley Playing Field again with confidence in its safety.
