Cause of Gloucester House Fire That Killed ‘Warm and Loving’ Woman Remains Unclear

The devastating cause of a house fire that claimed the life of a cherished woman in a quiet Gloucester neighbourhood is still under investigation, with authorities ruling out any third-party involvement.

The fire erupted on Attlebridge Way, Kingsway, around 5:25 pm on Wednesday, July 8, resulting in the tragic death of 42-year-old Amy Louise Stafford. Amy’s family has paid an emotional tribute, remembering her as “a bright light in our lives [that] has dimmed forever.” Floral tributes now adorn the doorstep of the smoke-blackened home, a poignant reminder of this heartbreaking loss.

Neighbours from Attlebridge Way and nearby Fersfield Gardens have voiced their disbelief and sorrow over the incident, describing a heavy, somber atmosphere in the community.

Many residents have left flowers outside the property as a mark of respect. One local woman, who wished to remain anonymous, recalled coming home from work to the sight of an ambulance in the street.

“It’s just horrible,” she said. “We don’t know what caused the fire yet, but it’s a tragedy. It all seemed to happen so quickly. She would always smile and say hello — even though I only knew her in passing. It’s such a shock, and there’s definitely a sombre tone around here now.”

Emergency services arrived promptly at the scene, including police, fire crews, and ambulance personnel. Amy was rushed to Southmead Hospital in Bristol with severe burns but tragically succumbed to her injuries later that evening.

Speculation among neighbours included reports of a possible explosion, though these remain unconfirmed rumours. The cause remains unknown pending further investigation.

On Friday afternoon, the new curate of St James Church in Quedgeley visited residents of Attlebridge Way, offering support and comfort to those grieving.

A police cordon was initially established to allow detectives and fire investigators thorough examination of the scene. Gloucestershire Police have since confirmed that after comprehensive searches and assessments, no evidence suggests third-party involvement.

The police statement read: “Scenes of crime officers, alongside Gloucestershire Fire and Rescue Service investigators, have concluded their search and assessment of the scene and are satisfied there is nothing to suggest third party involvement. Enquiries are continuing to ascertain the cause of the fire.”

Amy’s family released a heartfelt message through the police:

“Our beloved daughter and sister Amy has tragically been taken from us. Words cannot express our grief.

A bright light in our lives has dimmed forever, and our hearts will always seek the warmth and love she brought to us all. We extend our deepest gratitude to all rescue services who fought tirelessly to save our darling girl.

Our love goes out to all Amy’s family and friends near and far. Goodbye dearest Amy, sleep now. We are so proud of our independent lady.”
