Careless Burglar Caught After Leaving Fingerprints at Gloucester Crime Scene

A seasoned burglar is now serving a lengthy prison sentence after leaving crucial fingerprint evidence at a burglary scene in Gloucester.

Mark Hingley, 57, of Worcester Street, Gloucester, was also identified by a police officer who recognized him on CCTV footage while he attempted another break-in in the city.

On August 28, 2025, Hingley forcibly entered a property in the Elmbridge area and stole several items, including a stereo, record player, watches, and even a Victoria sponge cake.

Gloucestershire Police forensic investigators recovered fingerprints from a kitchen bin lid at the crime scene, which were later matched to Hingley.

That same day, Hingley tried to break into another home nearby. The occupant heard noises at the front door and caught sight of a man leaving the driveway with a bicycle. CCTV footage showed the suspect trying to force open the front door. When unsuccessful, he wiped the doorknob with his sleeve.

Police identified Hingley from the footage, arrested him, and discovered counterfeit £20 notes in his possession. Officers also found clothing in his room that matched what he wore in the CCTV images.

At Gloucester Crown Court on October 29, Hingley pleaded guilty to burglary and attempted burglary. He was sentenced to six years and nine months in prison.

PC Metcalf of the Gloucester Neighbourhood Support Team stated: “Hingley’s repeated offenses have caused significant harm to many. We are glad he is now behind bars and unable to harm our community further. This outcome reflects our commitment to taking burglary seriously and bringing offenders to justice.”
