Canalside Cafe Plans Advance at Former Pub Site in Stonehouse

Plans to establish a new canalside cafe in Stonehouse have taken a significant step forward as Stroud District Council approves entering lease negotiations with Stonehouse Town Council for the former Ship Inn site.

Originally earmarked for housing, the Ship Inn location has been reconsidered following the council’s 2022 decision to explore alternative community-focused uses. A detailed business case now proposes a timber-clad cafe housed within shipping containers, complete with restroom facilities.

Councillors have agreed to terms for a long-term lease transfer of the site at Wharfdale Way to the town council, valuing the land below its market price of £200,000. This concession aligns with Stroud District Council’s commitment to fostering stronger communities and enhancing local waterways.

Councillor Martin Pearcy (Green, Coaley and Uley), who endorsed the proposal, highlighted it as a prime example of the council responding to community needs. “This transfer supports the community’s vision and has widespread backing from Stonehouse residents and the town council,” he noted. “It’s genuinely good news.”

Stonehouse Ward Councillor and town councillor Carol Kambites (Green) praised the collaborative spirit surrounding the project. She shared observations of local volunteers actively preparing the site—laying stones for hardstanding, constructing picnic tables, and organizing fundraising barbecues. “The community’s dedication is truly inspiring,” she said.

Deputy Council Leader Catherine Braun (Green, Wotton-under-Edge), who spearheaded the proposal, commended the extensive effort invested in developing the business case. She emphasized the project’s synergy with the council’s flagship canal initiative. “Opening this beautiful site to the canal will greatly improve access for Stonehouse residents and the surrounding area, delivering substantial benefits,” Braun stated.

This community-led initiative promises not only to revitalize a prominent canal-side location but also to strengthen the local fabric by creating an inviting space for residents and visitors alike.
